Quick Guide For Handrail Picking

Safety and style are definitely the two important aspects to consider in choosing handrails for your home or office. If there are any areas wherein your stairs are open, especially when the stairway is designed to be curvy or angled, it becomes more of an accident-prone area in the household. Even with proper handrails, it is still a common place where accidents could happen. With small children running up and down, the stairway is a more frightening issue.
Replacing Handrailings
If your current handrail is now deteriorated with time, now is the perfect opportunity to get it replaced with a more fitting choice to suit the design or the overall theme of your house. A minimalistic household calls for a shiny metal bannister while a farmhouse like design would call for a classy wooden handrail. Perfect handrails do not only keep your family safe but acts as good home enhancements.

Choosing Handrailings
Before choosing from the wide array of modern railings, it is important to consider the general look of the house. First, consider who will be using the railing the most. There are some who greatly use railings as support; hence, a sturdy handrail bracket design is also something to consider. Others have smaller hands, especially the kids, and would need their railings to be lower and easy to hold.

Wooden
Wooden railings are considered to be the most common. This design adds elegance and helps enhance other wooden appliances, walls or floorings. It doesnt have to look very traditional. A stainless steel handrail bracket addition can take on an outstanding look. Wooden handrails are easier to modify to fit the contours of your place.

Metallic
Metallic designs greatly adapts to the desired design and shape. It doesnt matter if the staircase is straight or curved or even angled, a metal handrail can adjust and follow.
Stainless steel railing systems help awaken the hallways of ocean liners. Stainless steel railings lend a hallway a touch of art. A stainless steel handrail design is suitable for internal and external use.
Bespoke
A glass railing design spells out fancy. How about glass railings with embedded LED lights? Now that is futuristic. This would also help cut down the need of additional lighting.
Cable
A Cable railing design creates a sleek and elegant looking handrail. It is resistant to tampering and requires less maintenance. It complements your deck view and maintains a spacious vibe for your interior.

Even with all the considerations and suggestions presented above, never do away with experimenting on the best handrail that fits the bill.

Home Plan Design Design Harmony and Proportion

INTRODUCTION

This article is meant as a reference toolbox for home plan design harmony and proportion. The author prefers to deal with the practical how-to of it subsequently. The author, a custom home designer, suggests that there’s a place in designer home plans for age-old Western notions of unity, harmony, order, proportion, even Classicism.

Noteworthy, virtually all of these means and motives potentially applicable to designer house plans have been addressed in the literature and elsewhere principally to public or very large private structures coliseums, churches, huge bank buildings, and the like – rarely to home design.

The author has begun applying some very old ideas of design to some very new houses with success and surprises.

SUGGESTED READINGS

There’s a lot of reading on architectural design proportion and Classical design. Most of it’s not especially interesting clinical mathematics, nautilus shells and phyllotaxis, irrelevance borne of style, size, etc.

In the author’s opinion, these works are some of the better:

1. The heady, heavy-going: Architectural Principles in the Age of Humanism by Rudolf Wittkower, W. W. Norton & Company, 1971.

2. The intellectually entertaining and well-written The Golden Ratio: The Story of Phi, The World’s Most Astonishing Number by Mario Livio, Broadway Books, 2002.

3. The commanding presentation of the Orders, their making and remaking in The Classical Language of Architecture by John Summerson, The MIT Press, 1962.

4. Of methods and materials, Traditional Construction Patterns: Design & Detail Rules Of Thumb by Stephen Mouzon et al., McGraw-Hill. 2005.

5. The thoughtful, The Old Way of Seeing: How Architecture Lost Its Magic (And How to Get It Back) by Jonathan Hale, Houghton Mifflin, 1994.

6. The overarching [but not over-reaching, not hardly], A Pattern Language: Towns, Building, Construction by C. Alexander et al., Oxford University Press, 1977 and its companion The Timeless Way of Building by Christopher Alexander, Oxford University Press, 1979.

FAVORED HOUSE DESIGN HARMONIES AND PROPORTIONS

As to proportion and proportions alone, here are those presently favored by the author, mostly for their simplicity of expression:

1. Golden Mean, or Golden Section or Golden Ratio, or Mark Barr’s Ratio of Pheidias (a/k/a Phidias), or phi.

2. Lambda in Plato’s Timaeus plus 5 & 7.

3. Regulating lines (ou tracs regulateurs la Auguste Choisy et Le Corbusier) Subjectively, this is about balance, rhythm, symmetry, a sense of schema from illusive to hard rock.

PERSPECTIVE

For perspective, “As far as the laws of mathematics refer to reality, they are not certain; as far as they are certain, they do not refer to reality.” Sidelight on Relativity by A. Einstein, translated by G. B. Jeffery and W. Perret, London, 1922.

The practical use of these metrics so far for the author mostly relates – a) positive integers from 1-9 exclusively, b) plus Phi and phi, c) generally apparent and usually symmetrical lines of relationship.

Colour Psychology

Interior

Daring to use colour instead of bland white walls will increase your profit potential. A room that is painted white appeared larger to only a few people, compared to an identical room painted with a colour. The perceived difference to buyers is only minor. Because most people look better surrounded by colour, a coloured wall also makes them feel happier, and buyers will choose to buy the house that makes them feel happiest.

COLOURS help you sell your home to your target market. One mistake most people make is to paint everything white. White may look clean, but it will do little to make a buyer feel as if they “just cant live without the home.” White walls do not create cheerful feelings, and even worse, white walls dont make most people look good. Buyers will ultimately buy the home that makes them feel happy while making them look great at the same time.

Art of Display

Turn a tired shelf, coffee table or mantel into still-life masterpiece with styling techniques. Transform this area into the main feature of a room by choosing one of three basic treatments, each equally effective.

Symmetry Technique
Aside from the centrepiece, include two of everything and create the same set-up at either end.
Display the mirror/art work in the centre of a mantel or leave the middle of the surface free of decoration.
Keep the look simple with a couple of potted plants or lamps or dress it up with more ornate pairs of various heights. Offset Technique
Use the offset technique when an artwork or sculpture has centre stage.
Group a selection of smaller, similarly themed objects to one side.
Avoid cluttering.
Select pieces beautiful enough to stand alone.
Choose odd numbers of objects.
In a layered display, start with a neutral base then add colour.
Be more daring with colour if the display has only a few items. Pyramid Technique
Use an odd number of at least five seven items.
Keep the textures and tones harmonious. Soften hard lines with branches or flowers.
Make the centre of the display the focus by clustering objects in the middle.
Add a twist by creating a theme. For example colour or shape. Tip this techniques is fail-safe when the objects have a solid background and are arranged on a shelf or surface in front or a wall.

Designing with Neutral Colours

A 2,500 sq. ft. three-storey row house in Goregaon, Mumbai, designed by principal architect Jimit Mehta of ARCHOS in just seven months, follows a simple yet elegant design thematic-

Faced with the challenge of delivering the project in just seven months, the architect relied on the diligent functioning of his firm and quick decision-making from the client’s side to accomplish the project on time.

Following a basic philosophy of -keeping things simple and clutter-free’ – be it in the overall earthy tones largely comprising ivory and brown, or as seen in the fuss-free furniture, or even in the uniform marble flooring throughout the home – the residence is imbued with a contemporary and minimalistic style, while taking care of the needs of its homeowners.

Splashes of colour in different areas such as blue glass tiles in the kids bathroom; metallic tiles in the powder room; fluorescent green in the kids’ bedroom and colourful cushions in the living room etc. enliven the interiors.

Linear geometry being characteristic of all three levels, the architect seeks to break it by weaving strong yet understated design elements in the form of back-lit jaali in the living room; Tetris-game-themed ceiling in the kids’ bedroom and the dining table wrap-around-a-column feature in the dining room – anchoring the home with great flourish and aplomb.

Great care is also taken to maintain a high level of aesthetics. For instance, an unsightly column in the living-dining area is deftly converted into a dramatic feature by cladding it in stone textured tiles; doubling up as a solid support for the dining table.

Since the home is not directly in dialogue with nature, the creation of attention-grabbing features makes it an inwardly interesting one; while it endorses the architect’s acumen and skill set.

Rare Wood Veneer Styles Paldao, Bosse, Pecan, Butternut, And Avodire

In a society where everybody wants to be one of a kind, it makes sense that unique items are sought after. It works the same way in the world of veneer, where the best woodworkers, designers, and architects very often ask for rare woods. Keeping this in mind, I will be speaking of five species of rare veneers. Each one has unique characteristics that make it an excellent choice for only certain types of wood projects.

1. Paldao Veneer. Very similar to Orientalwood and Australian Walnut (the names are interchangeable), Paldao is a very unique and rare veneer that has a nice-looking mottle figure. It also looks comparable to American Black Walnut, but the black stripe in the mottle figure and the more red tone sets it apart. Paldao is used often in the manufacturing of furniture.

2. Bosse Veneer. This species is actually a Mahogany relative and has a pinkish pale color. It comes in many figured varieties including Pomelle and Fiddleback. Bosse is also called Spanish Cedar the same exact species with a different name. It is also used heavily in the interior of boats.

3. Pecan Veneer. This wood is basically interchangeable with Hickory. While the two woods are a different species, even the most knowledgeable woodworker would probably have a hard time telling the two apart. Pecan and Hickory can be calico, or two-toned light and dark, colored. It can also come in a single color, either dark or light. Pecan has been used in many different types of projects, from drum sticks to vehicle bodies.

4. Butternut Veneer. This wood is similar to Walnut in its grain pattern, but the color is whitish, similar to White Oak Veneer. For this reason, it often is called the White Walnut. The name Butternut doesnt necessarily bring up images of a rustic-looking wood, but rustic is actually an accurate description. Despite its rare nature, the species is grown primarily in the U.S. It is used very often in boats for interior trim.

5. Avodire Veneer. This is a yellow-pale wood with a bit of black-colored mottle figure, coming from Africa. It has a wavy-style grain pattern, and many say it is comparable to Satinwood or Primavera. Avodire is an excellent choice for high-end architectural designs and furniture projects.
